About

History of Alpha Gamma Chi

In the fall of 1963, seven young men met in Don Defino’s room at Lee College to discuss forming a second men’s group on campus. The group included Paul Conn, Steve Conn, Don Defino, Marvin Hadsall, Charles Hollifield, Dave Partin, and Gene Pharr. After consulting with Dr. Delton Alford and Dr. Charles W. Conn, they decided to petition the school for approval to form a literary society, avoiding the term “fraternity.” Dr. Donald Bowdle was chosen as co-sponsor, lending academic and spiritual support to the group. In their first official meeting, they unanimously selected the name Alpha Gamma Chi . The group, consisting of high-achieving students from various fields, quickly established itself with projects like the Cleveland Blood Drive, where 19 of the 21 members donated blood. The event was covered in the Cleveland Daily Banner, marking the beginning of Alpha Gamma Chi’s influential presence at Lee College and in the community.
